Legal Question

I'm 2 payments behind on my car payments and it was repo this morning. now this is the 2nd time it has been repo, I called the bank to make the late payments and now they want the full amount owed on the contract to get the car back. The guy at the bank has a nasty attitude, is this legal or is guy just being an ass?
