Legal Question

i asked a friend who used to be a car salesman for ford (about 8 years ago) if he knew anyone that would buy my 2008 Bently, he gave me a phone number in anaheim, ca i contacted the company and made the deal . I just recieved a letter from the friend that i owe him $3500 for commission from the sale of my car. what do i do?
