Legal Question

I was a patient of a doctor that is being charged with federal charges of medical malpractice. I did not file a malpractice suit on him, but one of his criminal charges is from my surgery. With a criminal trial, will I receive any kind of money compensation once he is convicted, or does compensation only come with a civil suit?
