A woman died in October. intestate. One of the two sons she had died a week ago also intestate. How is this handled?

An estate will need to be opened for the son and his estate will receive his interest from his mother's estate. His estate will pass to his surviving spouse, if any and his children if he did not have a surviving spouse or the surviving spouse was not the mother of all of his children.
