The regulations on this subject vary from country to country. So there is no European standard. In Germany, the mode of handling the the executed agreements and contract management is regulated by the differing Professional Rules for Attorneys, for Civil Notaries and Tax Accountants, and not only in respect of contracts but the whole file (for attorneys, it is five years maximum). Deeds filed by civil notaries (real estate transactions, wills, etc) are registered in the archive of the district court and the originals are stored forever. The same applies for deeds that involve the conveyance of land that have been submitted to the land registry. Public institutions like universities have their own regulations on this subject.
