Legal Question in Consumer Law in India

Hi, just now i went to a Cafe Coffee Day Lounge at Mumbai domestic airport terminal T1B. I asked for a water bottle which was having MRP of ₹30, buy the person told me that it will charge ₹50 as it is CCD Lounge. I asked him that MRP is ₹30 and why i have to pay 20 more bucks as nothing can be sold above MRP, again he said that this is CCD Lounge and you have to pay ₹50 without any explaination that where my extra 20 bucks will be going and why.

My only question is can anything can be sold over MRP irrespective of a 5 Star hotel or a local shop? As per my knowledge (which may be wrong also) if it is mentioned on the product "THROUGH PROPER CHANNELS" then only it can be sold above MRP as price is not written on that. Please reply with valuable feedback.

1 Answer from Attorneys

1) Consumers who are charged more than the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) by shopkeepers and hotels can now file their complaints on WhatsApp or dial up the Weights and Measures department for appropriate action.

2) The move follows a recent judgment of the Thane District Consumer Redressal Forum, which ordered a lodging hotel in Thane city to pay compensation to a consumer for charging 10 times more than the MRP for three bottles of a branded mineral water.

3) An official from the state Food and Civil Supplies department said that people can now WhatsApp their complaints on 9869691666 or dial 022-22886666 between 10:00 am to 05.30 pm to register their complaints.
