Legal Question in Employment Law in India

I worked in a self finance college at Ekm. After getting a job in military engg service, I resigned from college. But they asked me to pay 30,000/- as compensation for notice period. My certificate they withheld and hence i paid the money. Later my 2 colleges were terminated from job with out any prior notices. Last day one of my colleague gave 1 month notice period since she got another job. But management this time asked her to pay 30,000/- since she did not inform them that she is attending interview of another firm.

Sir can you clear me whether asking compensation with out notice period is legeal or not? Also guide me what can we do for this.

Dear Sir / Madam,

The decision to waive the notice period of any professor / lecturer solely vests with the College Principal. of the self finance college in Ernakulam. If the terms and conditions of your service require you to serve a month's notice after submitting your resignation, you will either have to serve the notice period specified in your appointment letter, or pay salary in lieu of notice period to your employer for the period you served short i.e the exact number of days that you did not work during the notice period.

Regards,
