Legal Question in Legal Ethics in

Professional Liability of an Independent Affiliate

Gentlemen,

We are interested to learn the scope & extent of the professional liability imposed, if any at all, on a Washington DC International Law Firm - for acts or omissins of its Independent Affiliate office or an independent office associated with the International firm - in another country.

Thanks for your courtesy and early reply,

Re: Professional Liability of an Independent Affiliate

This question does not have a clear answer. It depends on the facts, including the specific nature of the relationship between the affiliates, the role of the DC firm in either the retention of the affiliate by the client or the performance of the work, and how the firm marketed itself and held itself out to clients and potential clients. You need to have a lawyer licensed in D.C. (which I am) consider all the facts, research the issue, and advise you.
