Repossession Laws/Bankruptcy

I need to know if my secured creditor can repossess my car after I have paid a retainer to an attorney to file Bankruptcy. The credit did repossess my car, but did not know of the Bankruptcy because my attorney said not to tell them. So what I need to know is, if all this is legal?
