Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Alabama

Some very old credit card accounts have been purchased by different companies now I am being ask to pay these how old does a credit card account have to be to be before I am no longer liable for them?

There is some federal law that states if three years have gone by without a payment and no effort to collect by using the court system, then there is no cause of action. If it is just debt collectors and no law suits, just ignore the phone calls and letters.
