Legal Question in Criminal Law in Arkansas

I need to fire my attorney - how does this work?

Due to many ethical and professionalism issues I want to fire my attorney that is working on a criminal case for me. June 1 is the court date and I am at the point where I do not trust my attorneys to act in my best interest.

If I fire them who do I talk with within the court system to get a delay until I get other representation? This case has been delayed many times already for seemingly no reason other than the prosecution not being ready so I would hope this would be a valid reason for a continuance.

My other concern is getting my documentation back from the attorney. Does the attorney have to give it back or can he make it very difficult for me to get those records back?

I appreciate any help or comments. Thank you.

Re: I need to fire my attorney - how does this work?

You can fire your attorney at any time. You need to confirm his/her termination in writing. As soon as your terminate your attorney, you need to notify the court of the termination and request that the court allow a continuance for you to find additional counsel.

Your current attorney may not refuse to return your file.
