Legal Question in Appeals and Writs in California

Writing a writ of Haubus Corpis?

How would I go about composing a writ for my son who was convicted of a crime resulting in the death of his girlfriend if the time has run out for State writs in California? Can it be done.? I have some experience in law research and some trial experience however I am not an attorney. I have however won 2 civils cases and 3 criminal trials without attorneys so with help I think I can do it.
