I'm happy for you that you can afford to stick $50,000 checks in your desk drawer. If it's within the last three years, sue them. Send them a Lawyer Letter first.

I agree that a letter from an attorney first is likely your most cost-effective route. Depending upon how stale the check is, I (attorney) would send them a letter demanding payment. I would give them a limited time by which to respond and then proceed to file a lawsuit if they continue to refuse to pay.

Of course, questions that arise include but are not limited to how long has the check been sitting, do they claim any defenses for why they should not have to pay, etc.
