Legal Question in Business Law in California

Do I need a business license to freelance if I secure work through recruiting sites or staffing agencies? I would be paid by the platform or agency, not any clients directly. I'm a freelance marketing specialist.

Most likely, you do not need a license if you are having taxes withheld from your payments and are paying individual income taxes on your wages. Business licenses are issued locally by cities and towns, so if you want to be sure, you would need to contact the office in your locality that issues business licenses or, if your city has a website, the laws relating to business licensing may be posted there. Business licenses are a way local areas have of collecting taxes from business to help fund local government.
