Legal Question in Business Law in California

We run a dog/training and kenneling facility. One customer has abandoned their two dogs here. The dogs came in April and we are still feeding, exercising, and medically caring for the them. The owners made one payment on May 16th and have promised to be in to pay several times but never show up. We contacted them on 5/22, 6/2, 6/6, 6/19, 6/20 and finally on 6/23 we told them we were going to have to send them to the authorities as abandoned. The butte county animal control referred us to the local SPCA but they do not want to pick up the dogs or get involved

You may have to sue them, perhaps in the small claims court to recover any out of pocket expenses. The dogs are considered property under the law, even though animal lovers such as myself are loath to see them that way.

If you have not done so before, I would consult a local lawyer in private and make sure you are clear on the law in this area moving forward. I mean, this is your business and it is likely this will happen again.

Kind regards,

Frank
