Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

A defendant filed a motion to dismiss my complaint (a federal court in CA) and there is a judge assigned to hear the case. When do I get a chance to change the judge? At the hearing or before hearing? Can I call the clerk to change judge before hearing or should I file a motion to change the judge? Thanks in advance.
