Legal Question in Technology Law in California

I built a website that allows people to create an account, add ratings and notes on items, and then share their ratings and notes with just their friends. I need to get a terms of use and privacy policy but can't find where to start. Also, if this has to be done by an attorney how expensive do you think that will be. Isn't there someplace to get boilerplate policies from?

I'm tempted to say that boilerplate contracts are worth what you paid for them, but that's too simple. You may be lucky enough to find a boilerplate contract that's perfect, or you might adopt one that'll cause you all kinds of grief.

The best source of boilerplate contracts is from other people in the same business. Make some professional acquaintances with others who are either far enough away or doing something sufficiently different so you don't look like competition, then see if they're interested in striking up a professional acquaintanceship.

The ask them about their contracts.

Have a lawyer review it for your needs. Sometimes fine-tuning boilerplate is the cheapest way to get an acceptable document. It's still a bit below first-cabin practice.
