Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

To the ABA,

I am sending this message for personal reasons and to hopefully get some direction/advice. I received a small settlement through a class action suit "USA v. Fairbanks Capital Corp." back in 2005. unfortunately I had missed placed the check but have recently found it. When I inquired the Law firm who sent out the settlements I was told that the case was closed and that they could not reissue the check. My question is: Where does that money go? Is there an agency that I can contact to help retrieve the money? Is it legal not to appropiate my portion of the settlement? Is there a timeline on settlements? any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Class action settlements almost always have a provision for distribution of unclaimed settlement payments after a period of time, usually a matter of months, often with them going to some charitable purpose related to the nature of the claim, such as non-profit credit counseling organizations or anti-cancer groups, etc. Your funds are long gone to whatever recipient was designated in the settlement.
