Funeral Costs for Estranged Mother's Death

My wife's mother, who she has been estranged from for 40 years and hasn't seen or spoken to, passed away in alamedia, county california. We received a call from the county sheriff's office looking for someone to pay for her funeral costs. Do we have any liability for this? We live in Illinois and have all our lives.
