The good news is that he is a minor. The juvenile system is much more forgiving and has many more opportunities.

First - his case will go to the juvenile orobation department. They screen cases and handle some informally without charges being filed. If you get something from the probation department before his court date, do not ignore it - they may be offering him a pre-filing diversion.

If charges are filed, as a first offender, he is also likely eligible for diversion through the courts.

He can also petition to seal his records once he turns 18.

He does need a lawyer if charges are filed - either one you hire to represent him or the public defender appointed by the court.
