Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

I recently purchased 4 lotto tickets and gave one to each of my friends and said if anyone wins we split it. Well one of them was the $20,000 winner and he proceeded to sign the back of it, and said he would get back to me on it.Well it has been some time now I've tried contacting him on many occasions to no avail. And before I do anything stupid and end up in jail. What can I do legally if anything before it gets ugly. he used to be a friend of mine

Did your friend agree to share the proceeds with you if he won? Your question says only that you told him this is what you expected. That is not enough to require him to follow through. If he agreed, then your gift may have been conditional. That would mean you could enforce the conditions. Otherwise, I don't think he has any duty to share the proceeds with you.

Note that his agreement did not have to be in writing, or even spoken. He could have made his agreement clear via his actions -- for example, if you made your statement and then he nodded before accepting your ticket.
