Legal Question in Discrimination Law in California

I applied for a job at a hobby shop, then was told by the hiring manager that they were 'looking for a woman'. Today, I found out that the shop had in fact hired a woman. Is this grounds for discrimination, and how do I proceed from here?

Sure sounds like gender discrimination to me. Contact the EEOC and file a complaint.

It probably is discriminatory, unless being a woman is a legitimate qualification for the job or the employer employs less than 5 people.

You could retain an attorney to assist you or you could file a complaint with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, the state agency that investigates claims of discrimination. Complaints must be made within a year of the discrimination.
