Legal Question in Elder Law in California

My mother is staying at a nursing home costing around $5000/month for 10 months. Her saving will run out in a few more months. Can we apply for some help from the government and if we get it can she still stay at the same place or she has to move out to a cheaper place?

Most nursing homes accept Medi-Cal benefits - check with www.nursinghomeguide.org to see if your mother's does. If it does, then when your mother either spends down her funds or shelters them through Medi-Cal Planning, then she can stay in the same facility where she is today. You should consult with an elder law attorney in your community to see what can be done to shelter your mother's excess funds without having to spend it all first. It's important to do this, because once your mother qualifies for Medi-Cal, then 100% of her income except for only $35 must be spent on the nursing home bill or other medical expenses as her "share of cost". Sheltered assets can be used by her family to supplement the care Medi-Cal will provide her.
