Legal Question in Family Law in California

Do I have to have a child support court order in place before I file for custody? I was told by the family court facilitator that I could not file for sole physical or legal custody until I had the child support court ordered. This process is taking a long time since the father lives in CT and we live in CA. He has a huge criminal and mental history and I fear for my son and I and would legally like to have full custody. He already slammed my son down once at 6 months old. Please help. Thank you
