Legal Question in Family Law in California

Do I need to have a court reporter for a divorce hearing regarding alimony and child custody? I hear that I cannot appeal the decision if I do not have one.

You can appeal, but you won't have a record of what was said.

The sad reality in California is that we've suffered terrible budget cuts through the courts. Some departments and counties no longer have court reporters unless you pay for them. We hope that this situation will change at some point in the future. Until then, you must have a court reporter recording what is happened if you wish to keep a record of the events for appeal or for confirming what court orders were issued on that hearing date.
