Legal Question in Family Law in California

I filed for divorce. We own nothing together. I do not want alimony. We have no children. He has a business I want no part of, yet they say we need a lawyer why there is nothing to fight. It's not a contested divorce

I'm not sure who "they" are, so it's hard to say why "they" say that. Most likely, however, it is because you are legally entitled to alimony and also compensation for part of the value of the business. Most family law judges will not allow you to waive those rights without making sure you have obtained legal advice as to all the relevant rights you may be waiving. For example, although the business is not in your name, if it was opened or grew during the marriage, you have legal right to compensation for the value of the company, even if you want no part of actually running it now or in the future. You may already know that and want to waive it anyway, but until an attorney signs off on it as having advised you about your rights, the judge has no way of knowing that you are making fully informed decisions.
