Legal Question in Family Law in California

My ex and I have a hearing on 9/28 for a request/modification of custody/visitation. Today I received a declaration that he filed in the mail. Can I respond to his declaration or do i have to wait until we are in court?

It's rather late, but you can submit a written response if you like. Have a copy hand delivered to the judge's courtroom or he/she won't get it before the hearing.
