Legal Question in Family Law in California

In a Joint Custody, is it California Law that the father has to tell the mother he is taking the child out of state (to visit)? What if something happened, I wouldn't have known anything about it.

Yes, once there is a final custody order in place travel within the United States is unrestricted. Issuance of a passport and exiting the country still requires the other parent's consent.

If you do not already have an order that specifies that one party will notify the other prior to out of state travel, then I would absolutely suggest one. I usually advise my clients to request an order that not only provides adequate notice, but also includes general itinerary, a copy of the travel documents, and contact information.
