Legal Question in Family Law in California

So here's the story our friend dumped her kid off on me and my wife we've had her for three years now we've been taking care of her physically,emotionally,financially with no help from the mother the only time she's been a mother is when it's convenient for her we've only been doing this for the kid and now coming this October she wants to take the kid to live with her and my wife and i wants to know if there's something we can do....
