I've been granted time to care for my dying mother through the family medical leave act. Can i use some of the time to settle the estate, etc. after her death?

The FMLA or the CFRA were set up to allow qualified employees to provide medical assistance for seriously ill family members. There is nothing in either law that requires employers to allow employees to take time off to settle estates. If your employer will allow you to extent your leave by using vacation or bereavement time, that is a matter between you and your employer. If they won't, there is no guarantee of job protection.
