Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Auto mechanic filed a lien (we assume) but with no attempt to contact us. We'd paid every bill emailed to us up to then. We received no lien notices from anyone and he sold our car - its a classic and worth a lot more than his repair bill. We did move residences but our office address, all phone #s and all emails remained the same. We hired a P.I. to locate him and the new 'owners'. Police say its a civil matter. Your advice?

This is typically not the type of matter the police will help you with. What to do depends on the value of the car. If it is less than $10,000 small claims may be the best way to go. If the value of the car is substantial or the goal is to get the car back, that is a much more complicated matter and you will need to consult with an attorney in person. Find one familiar with the lien sale process.
