Filing a conservatorship yourself is difficult, because they're more complicated than most other probate filings with more paper. However, it can be done and is often done, and there are some self-help books out there. I don't see a way other than the conservatorship for your mother-in-law, so it would be necessary. An attorney would likely be $4,000 to $5,000, so if this is out of the budget, take a look at the self-help books. The courts usually have the forms you need bundled up as a packet, but they can't help you fill them out. You might also try local senior centers to see if they have any low-cost or pro bono referrals.

I highly recommend the book The Conservatorship Book for California, $44.99 from Nolo Press, www.nolo.com . It contains a great deal of information and all the necessary forms. You may also be able to find this book in your local library or courthouse law library.
