Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

I payed a company $9,000 to build an engine for my car, I shipped them my engine that they were going to strip and completely build to withstand 1000hp. I bought all the parts needed through them and payed for the work. All that was left was shipping back to me. Now the company will not return my calls and screens my calls but they are still in business. When I call from an anonymous number they answer and then when I talk to the owner he makes an excuse as to why he can't talk and he hangs up. What can I do to get my money back, my engine back or both?

Unless you have a written agreement with them that allows you to recover attorney fees, you should consider suing them in small claims court. The limit is $10,000. Nolo press has an excellent book on small claims court, which you can use to represent yourself. Also see http://limitedscopecounsel.com/small-claims/ for ways to consider getting legal help. There may be deadlines applicable to your case which could prevent you from collecting, so you should act right away.
