Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Recently, I had a discussion about politics on a relative's facebook timeline (in a public status update). Since she nor her contacts were able to provide a counterargument, she got angry and blocked me. After blocking me, she posted some false statements about me, including, "he's my crazy cousin" and "everyone has that crazy relative living in his parents' basement thinking that the reason for their sad lives is a liberal conspiracy." What type of legal action can I take and how much will it cost me? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

There is likely no legal action you can take. There is no legal action available against insults alone. Did you lose a job because your employer believed your cousin that you are crazy? Did your fiancee break off an engagement because she believed you live in your parents' basement? Unless the insult is a statement of fact, not opinion, AND someone sees/hears it and believes it, AND based on that does or fails to do something that results in actual real world harm to you, preferably demonstratively financial, there is no legal case.
