Depending on what kind of appearance, you can either write a letter requesting one or you may have to make a formal motion. Be sure you do whatever early enough before the hearing. Judges don’t like requests for postponement the day or day before the appearance. There are certain requirements as to how long but without knowing more I cannot be more specific.
