That depends on the court. Some courts allow you to pick your own date as long as you have given the amount of notice required by the Code of Civil Procedure. Others require you to reserve a date and may be booked up a long time ahead of the next available hearing date. A few will assign you the hearing date when you file, and then you have to give notice to the other side after filing the moving papers. So you need to check your local rules and any information posted by the court clerk's office about filing and scheduling motions.
