Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Last year (summer) I provided my neighborhood with my old computer she said she could help me retreated files from. She managed to get the computer functioning and saved some files on a USB drive. The problem was that the files were of an outdated software and I was unable to open them. We went back and forth trying to get the files to open. In July we had a minor fallout and did not speak for a few months.

I later found someone who could help me. I asked her to return my computer and she said she no longer had it. She tossed it! At no point did we make arrangements for her to do this especially since I had intentions of using the computer for my the year old son to use. She eventually gave me back the hard drive with no other components to the computer (witness was present). I would like to know what I can do to make her pay for the loss.

Thanks,

Wallace
