Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

I have a friend who just became a US citizen. He is divorced and his son who is 17 1/2 yrs old lives with his mother, not him. Can he apply for citizenship for his son and is it better to do it now or later when son is of age.

The son may acquire U.S. Citizenship through the father and may not need to apply separately if the father has legal or physical custody of the child before he turns 18. I would be important for them to understand their options and determine whether acquisition has occurred.
