Your landlord's insurance company probably has no obligation to you or your family, only to your landlord (unless, perhaps, you were actually living in your landlord's home rather than a seperate rental unit on the property)

You should consult with a competent attorney to determine whether you have grounds to make claims against or sue your landlord, or perhaps a third party who may have caused the fire. Once you make a claim against your landlord, his insurance company might then be required to defend him and perhaps pay you. Much will depend on the cause of the fire and the condition of the property as it may have contributed to that cause.

You should contact the lawyer's referral service of the San Diego County Bar Association for referrals to local attorneys. I also work with a network of attorneys who handle cases such as throughout southern California, and I might be able to find an attorney for you to consult with.
