Legal Question in Employment Law in California

paying personal money for mistakes

i work in a hotel and it was an extremely busy night. at the end of the shift my cash drawer was $5 short. my manager said this is the only time it will slide, the next time this happens you are resonsible for correcting your drawer. one of the ladies i work with is in her 50s and its happened to her as well. so she been putting money from her own pocket to keep her job. Are either of these circumstances legal?

Re: paying personal money for mistakes

Hello. Great question.

This practice is illegal. The employer assumes the risk of ordinary losses, including cash shortages from sales, by running the business, and therefore may not pass those losses to the employees.

Thanks,
