Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I recently received a letter from a former employer stating that in 2006 and 2007 I was overpaid a gross amount of $249.54. They are requesting that I pay that amount within the next 2 weeks or it will go to a Tax collector for collections. Is there a statute of limitations that dictates how long they can request payment after the error was made. It has been over 3 years!!!

After several years, I'd be tempted to tell them 'no thank you'. Even if true, they have waited so long to find it that they can't claim any kind of 'fraud' on your part. They can't send a 'tax collector'; at worst they could sue you in small claims court. You could defend it there and maybe win, or decide to pay or settle with them then.
