Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

My landlord in California agree to keep my things while I was out of states . I left in May due to family matters and paid rent until August I moved almost everything out except stuff that cannot put in storage . There were no lease agreement except bank transfer and no document on what he hold except text and phone conversation.

However he refuse to return my things ( cash jewelry) and he just said its gone and said my ex took it ( he let her in while I was away) my ex return all of my stuff however my land lord is not.

Is there anything I can do to get my stuff? Any action or case can be taken? Thank you

If you had paid your rent until August why if your landlord bring asked to hold your personal property? You could have simply let it stay inside your apartment and not have to ask your landlord to hold it for you. Also, who would you leave cash and jewelry with your landlord?

Anyway, if you think your landlord or your ex or anyone else entered your home without your permission and took your cash and jewelry you should file a burglary report with your local police station.

If your landlord told you he took your personal property you should sue him for the return of the property or for the value for conversion.
