Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Landlord and Tenant Question

Hello,

I am a tenant in a townhome and have another tenant next door. They are suing the property management company, owner of the townhouse and also named me in the lawsuit. This is because she is being evicted and somehow thinks I have something to do with it. I have only met the lady one time about 4 months ago. Is it the property managers responsibility to represent me in this matter? Everything in the lawsuit is completely false and I don't want to spend money on a lawyer if possible. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Re: Landlord and Tenant Question

I'm unclear on why you think that the property managers should defend you? They have nothing to do with your getting sued. After you prevail in the action, you might have grounds to sue the plaintiff for malicious prosecution and get your fees back that way, but the property management company has no responsibility for the tenant suing you.

Re: Landlord and Tenant Question

No, you cannot rely on the property managers to defend you. They are not practicing lawyers.

Why don't you scan, pdf, or fax met the complaint and I'll do my best to tell you whether or not you need an attorney.
