Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Prior to signing a Lease Agreement I wanted a copy of the paperwork and read completely through it. The Apartment Managers said that I could not have the paperwork in advance of the signing; that I could not take the paperwork off the premises. Is this legal? Can I demand to see the apartment prior to signing papers?

If they won't let you see the apartment that you are going to lease or read the paperwork, don't sign the paperwork and do business with someone else.
