Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

i qualified to rent an apartment, however my roommate had a low credit score and did not. they therefore required an additional 700 deposit for him to be on the lease, which i paid. He moved out a few months ago and signed all the proper forms to get off the lease. i was told i could not recover the deposit money until i moved out, is this correct??
