Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

My rental is dark and probably moldy. The landlord won't let me prune any branches to let more sunlight in because it's an illegal rental and they want to keep it hidden. This year the windows leaked and my couch got soaked. I've been coughing alot for months, even though I'm not sick. I'm currently looking for a new place to live. Is this landlord responsible for my damaged furniture? If there's mold in my lungs, should this landlord be held accountable?

If you are in a rent controlled unit, or if your unit is covered by any rent control exception, such as in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, etc., then you are in for a treat. Find out if the unit is rent controlled, and if so, you can withhold your rent and demand money for relocation assistance. If the LL knew about the condition of the unit and did nothing to alleviate the cause, they are certainly liable for something. Good luck..
