Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I rented an apartment with my another roommate on sep 2012 and after 10 months I came out of the lease agreement in May 2013. I have the "roommate release document" on which the Landlord and my another roommate also signed to release me out of all responsibilities.

Now I was staying in the same apt till July 2013 (not being on lease) and that apt's lease got terminated in Nov 2013. My roommate got a $5K move out statement and now he is telling me to share in that saying "You stayed for 10 months" Can he sue me? I am on H1B, if he sues me but I win the case (most likely) does that affect my green card process ?

Civil suits generally don't affect the process. You should ask yourself if you legitimately owe any if the 5K. For example if the 5 K was incurred by your damages or your use above normal wear and tear or utilities that were not paid etc, you should consider paying before he sues.
