Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
We signed an apartment lease to start on March 1. Is there a period of time in which we can back out of the lease?

I'm afraid not, although the landlord is obligated to try to find a replacement tenant if you don't take the unit. So if you know for sure you will not move in, the sooner you notify the landlord the better for you.
