Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Unlawful Detainer case: I received interrogatories and a request for production of documents on Wednesday, by overnight courier (although the proof of service says they were sent on Monday. The packet was left on top of our building mailboxes). I am supposed to serve the answers by Monday, but I've been advised to write the landlord's attorney and ask for extra time to find some (pro bono) legal help. What if he refuses the request, though? I'm so scared, and I certainly don't want to miss the deadline, but it's reached a point where I'm not comfortable handling this on my own anymore. Also...on Wednesday, my landlord's workers cut through the phone line leading into my apartment, so I had no phone nor Internet service until yesterday. Thanks in advance for your help!

If the landlord's attorney does not give you an extension you have to either have the discovery completed by the deadline, or must appear in court and ask the court for a protective order/ extension. If you fail to have the discovery completed by the deadline, you will be deemed to have waived any objections to the discovery, and the landlord's attorney can file a motion with the court to get an order compelling you to respond.
