Legal Question

i filed a police report for a stolen laptop and about 2 weeks later I came into work and my manager starts talking to me about my case saying that his friend a member of the police department told him that he has a employee in the "grey" area, referring to the person who stole my laptop. Is it possible to sue the police dept for slander/defamation?
